In a perfect world packages arrive at their destination on time, however we don’t live in a perfect world. This is where Slipp Nott’s customer service can come into play. Our commitment to getting your order to you promptly sometimes has us going above and beyond the normal shipping methods.

Recently a high school boy’s basketball team ordered two large Slipp Nott sets to be delivered to Detroit overnight for a game scheduled for the next day. However as we all know, stuff happens, and during the rush of shipping many orders, the sets went UPS Ground instead. That would have delivered the sets 3-4 days after they were needed, which doesn’t help the team win their game. Calls to UPS and other shipping companies to set up same day service proved fruitless. The shipping companies couldn’t help the team receive their equipment on time and calling the team to explain the dilemma wouldn’t help them when they needed it so we had to think quick and act even quicker to make sure the customer was satisfied.

Coincidentally, one of our employees had to fly to Dallas the same day the sets were scheduled to be delivered to the team and he saw the trip could

Arrive at around 6 AM, board at 6:30 and depart at 7!

be used to make sure the sets arrived on time. He quickly arranged to leave Los Angeles 8 hours earlier than planned, which had him flying out at 1:00 A.M., and landing in Dallas at around 6 that morning. He immediately boarded a plane for an 8-hour side trip to Detroit with the large sets in tow for a personal delivery to customer.

The box carrying the two large sets was approx. 29” x 30” x 2” and weighed about 30 pounds. Due to the last minute changes so close to departure to accommodate the unplanned side trip, plus a late arrival to the airport, the box couldn’t be checked in. Just as he was being turned away, he asked if it was a full flight. “No” the lady said. “Do you think they’ll let me take this on as a carry on?”, he asked. “You can try if you want”. He took the chance and asked her to print out a boarding pass for him. After some running through the terminal, getting through security with the box, he still had to ask the attendants if he could lug this box on as a carry on. The employee said he could try to put it into the first class closet but if did not fit, they would have to check it (Yeah!).

2 LS60 in Detroit Airport

The well-traveled box was rushed through LAX onto the flight then through DFW to its final flight to Detroit. That’s over 2600 miles traveled from our offices in Los Angeles.

The trip didn’t end there, the employee hailed a cab so he could personally deliver the box to its final destination about 30 miles outside of Detroit. After about an hour drive he arrived at the address and handed off the sets to the team before the start time of their game. He then hopped back in the cab and onto the airport to board a flight back to Dallas, having traveled over 3,850 miles in less than 12 hours to make sure the boys basketball team had the sets they needed. Mission accomplished.

Thank goodness for moving sidewalks in these huge airports.

We hope we don’t always have to go to such lengths to guarantee customer satisfaction but when a customer needs Slipp Notts we will try our best to get the product to them on time. Excuses won’t help win a game or competition when what you really needed didn’t make it to you. Luckily the guys on the team didn’t need to find that out.

We would also like to thank Duane Wade and Mission Athletecare for helping us point just how easy our product is to use. For years, we’ve resisted caving in to high dollar endorsement deals in order to keep our prices down. Thankfully, with their help, we can continue to keep our costs down and pass these savings on to you, the clients.

We’ve compiled a few points to consider after viewing the cool video effects and considering about switching to Court Grip:

The eastbay site says that Court Grip “has acetone as an ingredient, with some silica blended in as well”.

Acetone is an organic solvent and releases volatile organic compounds into the air but in small amounts probably no significant amounts, cumulatively who knows. Basically, Acetone is the active ingredient in nail polish remover and evaporates quickly.

The instructions tell you to allow it to dry because not allowing it to dry could it would pose a danger to the athlete because it would be slippery. On the plus side the acetone might come in handy for removing gum and other sticky substances from the floor.

Silica to enhance grip is nothing new, we’ve been using it in our S-N Gripp for about 8 years or so. Silica however, does this by creating a micro-rough surface which is great for hands but in our opinion not so much for athletic shoes. While it might enhance grip initially, if it does this through the use of silica, this new product can only do that by using the micro-rough surface to grip against the floor’s finish and thus abrading the floor finish.

No AIR SHIPPING since it would have to be categorized as a hazardous material by the D.O.T.

An entire team can walk on and off a Slipp-Nott in less than 30 seconds. There is no prep, nor application time and no “drying time”.

Slipp-Nott can be and has been shipped overnight for important games, tournaments and one time for a Saturday Bulls game per Jordan’s request.

Every part of our product can be recycled.

Slipp-Nott improves grip on ANY smooth, indoor floor, even tiles. Many schools and facilities use composite floors. Court Grip is only effective on wood.
Why? Silica will have no effect on another hard surface like composite floors.

Slipp-Nott is used by facilities and teams not only for safety and performance enhancements but also for marketing and branding because you can customize it with your school, team or event logo. Check out some of the THOUSANDS of designs we’ve made over the years.

On average a single large sheet costs about one dollar . If you peel off one sheet per quarter, using a single large Slipp-Nott may cost you about $4 ($8 if the team/event/facility uses two large Slipp-Notts like they do at the Final Four) to clean the shoes of an entire team for a game. Compare that to an approximate cost of $1 person per game.

Let’s be conservative and say someone only needs to use the product 3x/game. 50 applications divided by 3 means about 16.7 games per bottle. That is a little under $1/person/game. Do the numbers. Slipp-Nott is FAR MORE cost effective.

We can unequivocally guarantee, even on a microscopic level that our product will do ZERO harm to floor finishes because our adhesive is water based and contains no solvents nor microscopic grit.

The only surprise a Slipp-Nott user may face is to step on a Slipp-Nott mat and find that the the sheet is not sticky because it is already covered with dust and dirt from previous use. In that case, all they have to do is take 5 seconds to bend down and peel the top sheet off the way (Michael Jordan did until he retired) thousands of Pro and amateur players all over the world do everyday. On the other hand, what is the worst that can happen to an athlete if they apply any liquid product to their shoe soles and step on the court without letting it dry completely? How safe would that be for athlete’s ankles, knees or career?

Slipp-Nott can only be obsolesced when we do away with dirt or truly revolutionize the way we can handle dirt and the playing surfaces involved. Unless a product can continually “renew” the surface of the shoe sole or somehow eat the dirt, no product can “last longer” than any other product because we are dealing with a combination of:

dirt on clean, naturally grippy surfaces (athletic shoe soles)

how well, how quickly AND how conveniently a product initially removes the dirt from the athletic shoe surface

how FAST and conveniently the product (or YOU if you need to manipulate the product on your shoe soles) can do it again when called upon to do it again after your shoe sole “reloads” with dirt, there are 15 seconds left on the clock and your coach yells your name out.

As for Wade’s assertion that “the effects are short-lived (“a couple of seconds”)”…

If the floor is very clean, you sneakers will stay clean for a long time. Theoretically, if the floor were spotless, you’d only need to use any product one time and it would last forever. If the floor is poorly maintained, (like a court covered with dirt as an extreme example) as soon as you stepped on the floor, they’d be dirty again. In other words, the clean effect will last for as long as the shoe sole remains clean and the length of time the sole will remain clean depends on how clean the floor is to begin with.

The bottom line is that the effect could last 3 minutes it could last 20, the determining factor is the CONDITION OF THE FLOOR NOT THE PRODUCT. As we told Howard Beck during our the phone interview, it is quite possible that if they have some kind of binding agent that temporarily bonds the silica (micro-fine powder/sand/grit) to the shoe sole, it is possible that to the extent that they can get the silica to stay on (which honestly can’t be very long without actually using glue!) the shoe, it may initially give the perception of increased grip but that grip would not come free, the floor finish would pay for it. You have to pay to play and in this case, you pay for the product and the facilities pay to refinish the floor.

This isn’t magic folks, no product (so far) is able to eat, destroy, nor hide the dirt that tracks onto the sole of the athletic shoe and once it is on there, it is there until it is removed. A small amount won’t really affect your traction but it is cumulative and while it is there, it is going to reduce contact between your rubber/composite soles and the floor and therefore impede traction. Your traction will get worse and worse as the dirt continues to build until you clean your shoes how you choose to do it and how quickly is up to you. You can get up and walk across a Slipp-Nott traction system the way the highest paid, most gifted basketball players of all time have chosen to do (and still continue to do today sans Mr. Wade of course because since according to him, he does not really get a benefit from it, he’ll be using his roll on exclusively) or you can grab a bottle, take the cap off, wipe each shoe sole, put your $15 bottle away so it does not walk away and wait for them to dry — the choice is yours.

They can also simply be ordered single unit. When they are ordered in smaller quantities, they are:

printed on one of our in-house large format printers

inspected for color accuracy

hand trimmed

re-inspected again

On occasion, we will get a Slipp-Nott custom order with a color other than white bleeding out to the edges. In those cases, when possible, we take special care to try to match the edges of the print so as to avoid having a white edge:

In the past long standing relationships with certain conferences has afforded us the designation of “Official Traction Mat of the …………”. During the month of February, we are making the opportunity to designate Slipp-Nott as their “Official Traction Mat” available to select ALL conferences/organizations:

with more than 10 member institutions and

that plan to purchase replacement mats from us on an annual basis

Specifically, the program benefits would be:

Two free 75 sheet replacement mats per year (assuming you use the previous year’s custom bases).*

Should the conference/organization require new custom sets, their inclusion in this new program would allow them to BOGO (buy one get one) free for the duration of the endorsement (typically 3-5 yrs).*

Conference/member schools (teams) would be entitled to 20% off the then current price for Custom Sets until for the duration of the endorsement.

In return, Slipp-Nott will be designated the “Official Traction Mat of the ________ ” for the next _ years.

Orders must be placed a minimum of 2 weeks prior to their “need by” date.

To qualify for their discounts member organizations must identify themselves as being part the organization for us to apply their Official Traction Mat discount upon placing their order for a custom base.

The motivation behind this new “Official Traction Mat” campaign is the same as it is for many campaigns, for potential customers to find out more about us and the teams/organizations that use our products. Being officially recognized by the organization itself, would entail the press releases required to formally announce the partnership and for them to post our logo on their website with that designation. Slipp-Nott will in turn place the conference logo on our website.

That’s it in a nutshell! If your organization would be interested in such an arrangement, please let us know.

We are presently the Official Traction Mat of the PAC10, WCC, Conference USA, Southland, Sunbelt, MAC, Mountain West, Big 10 and the WAC.

Good luck to everyone with their “Second Seasons”!

Well, I had found what appeared to be a great deal on inks and to tell you the truth, had the people running “Worldclassink.com” known just a teeny bit about customer service, they’d actually be a great resource for product. The problem usually comes down to service, customer service that is. In most cases, companies in the business of selling commodities like Sprint (and worldclassink.com) are “OK” to deal with just as long as you NEVER have a problem with their product or service. The problems start popping up when you have a problem and you need someone to actually “HELP”. In the case of these clowns, all they would have had to do was do some math to figure out that sending me a couple of replacement cartridges and media to make up for what I had to waste would have kept me happy and actually had me singing their praises to anyone that would listen. As is usually the case, they instead tried to see if I would simply “go away”. When I didn’t they tried to figure out “what can I try to offer this customer that will cost me the least amount of money”. You see, most people working for companies think that way, they think that customers service issues are merely a nuisance to be gotten rid of. Unfortunately, it seems as though the supervisors and administrators of these companies don’t know any better, so when there’s trouble, they run and hide as well.

The smart companies and their management do the opposite, they look at customer service as an “opportunity” to make their company, their product and their people look good. You see, once you a customer is buying from you, they have already made a mental decision to spend their money at your company. So to keep them buying from you is not nearly as hard as trying to convince someone who’s never bought from you before to start! Don’t believe me? Try doing a search for “easier to retain existing customers than to get new ones” and see how many articles and blog posts you get as a result. In any case, the following is an example of a very short sighted company with a reasonably priced product that did EVERYTHING IN THEIR POWER TO CHASE AWAY A ONCE SATISFIED AND HAPPY CUSTOMER back to their original supplier.

A fellow printer recommended we take a look at “World Class Ink” as a potential third-party ink supplier for our large format Epson Stylus printer needs. We did and their shipping was not bad, the ink colors matched the OEM inks quite well and prices were great! What more could you ask for? (More on this later! Hint — you get what you pay for.)

Color matching prints is a time consuming process and ink costs are a major factor when pricing our large format print. OEM inks do not get discounted even when purchasing multiple cartridges. Reliable, consistent third party inks for Epson printers are not easy to find so I thought I had found a real gem here.

Well, on October 13th, I had what anyone who does large format printing would call a “bad” day. None of the prints being sent to the printer were printing with the proper colors, all of them were way too dark. I kept on sending the print but everyone of them was too dark. I changed every variable I could think of:

Rendering Intents

Profiles

Black point compensation

Different PMS colors

Different PMS swatchbooks

Constant “soft-proofing” to see exactly what was going on

Constant Nozzle checks to make sure that we were getting all jets firing

Print after print wasting time, ink and some of my hair!

When I was at my wits end (11:30 PM!), I did another nozzle check but happened to look more carefully at the actual print out. I then compared it to an old nozzle check I had laying around and noticed a difference. The light magenta section was not magenta at all, it was black! I immediately emailed World Class Inks:

Dear World Class Inks,

I am in a terrible jam! I have been working feverishly all day to try to get a logo printed but the red color just kept on printing like a dirty red, almost a clay red. After many, different profile changes and rendering intent changes with NO CHANGE, I decided to do a nozzle check. There were a couple of jets that were not firing but they could not account for the color differences. I then took a closer look at the nozzle check printout and the section that should be light magenta looked black to me. Although I am EXTREMELY careful when installing the cartridges, I still decided to pull the LM cartridge out to check and it is labeled correctly. I then looked at the actual ink lines and I am almost positive that the LM line looks BLACK!

Please advise what I should do!

Thanks,

I called and spoke to a young lady this morning who was basically offering me a replacement cartridge as a solution for my 9600 that I have been unable to use for 5 days now.
Dear Scott,

It is clear that you are not taking this very seriously so I will lay it out a little better for you.
1. I have purchased several sets of cartridges from you for my printer
2. The products you’ve sold to me have been working fine and thus my printer has been working fine.
3. I replaced a Light Magenta cartridge sometime last week and shortly after I did, my colors started getting darker.
4. I spent an entire day trouble shooting my icc profiles, my rendering intents and even my PMS color book selection
5. I then did a nozzle check and happened to notice that the Light Magenta section was in fact BLACK!
6. I checked the ink line and it was in fact BLACK!
7. I HAVE PLACED SEVERAL CALLS TO YOUR COMPANY AND SENT SEVERAL EMAILS AND HAVE GOTTEN ZERO RESPONSE.
8. I have been unable to print any work since last Thursday and today is Tuesday.
9. Everyday that you delay in dealing with this makes my situation and thus YOUR situation and position worse.
10. I initially was asking you for assistance with how to clear this up but my request for assistance has not turned into anger at a company whose customer service merely told me that my 90 day warranty had expired on the cartridge.
11. At this time, the product you sold me has disabled my printer.
12. I have all the documentation and proof to show that my printer’s problems are a direct result of your product because:
◦ my RIP software keeps a log with date and time of every print job I execute
◦ I have UPS shipping logs showing that we have been shipping jobs printed with this printer
◦ I have a print out of light black for a file that defined as 63% magenta
◦ I have a Light Magenta Cartridge that is hot stamped as an LM cartridge that has black ink in it
I called yesterday and the young lady said that she would have you call me and as of Tuesday morning, no one from your company has lifted a finger to help.

Now, I have print jobs that should have been shipped out last week and another two that have come in this week that I cannot even begin to print. Would you like to help me deal with this problem voluntarily or should I pursue more effective but less friendly methods?

Sincerely,
Jorge Julian

I gave them a few days and called them again, I couldn’t believe that a company’s management could be so daft to simply let a paying customer go over something which they clearly had not only the power to correct but something that would cost them so little…or could they???
To be continued…

Over the past two years alone, they have increased more than 15%. In an effort to reduce both our carbon footprint and our costs we have redesigned our boxing.

Dear Slipp-Nott dealers,

As you know, the current state of the economy remains very challenging. Historically, raw material costs have increased on the order of 2-6% about every 9-12 months. Over the past two years alone, they have increased more than 15%. In an effort to reduce both our carbon footprint and our costs we have redesigned our boxing. The new boxing will hold either bases or mats only. Packing either bases or mats into the same positive lock tab box means:

higher efficiency

decreased box unit costs since we can order more of one box rather than a smaller quantity of two different boxes

eliminates the padding used to keep mats from moving in between the bases

total tape reduction for palletized shipping (reduced taping means faster boxing and reduced tape costs)

80% tape reduction for single boxes shipped via UPS (reduced taping means faster boxing and reduced tape costs)

individual package weight will be split between two (2) boxes and therefore results in lighter, easier to handle boxes (your back will be thank us)

Though officially bases & sets will be available separately starting in January, we have already started shipping orders using this new boxing scheme. Any “small set” orders that are split up will now be accompanied with a packing list itemizing the order as it was placed along with a box count detailing the base/mat separation.

We understand that after buying sets from us for over two decades it may take some getting used to, so we are prepared to field any questions you may have regarding the new packaging changes.

We appreciate your business and continued support!

Sincerely,

The other day, I received a heavy piece of equipment. It came in two boxes. One box was particularly heavy but it did have some hand holds on the side — or did it??? They certainly looked like they were meant to facilitate moving the box but wait, what does it say here next to the hole…

140 pound Chipper Shredder in a box

Wait a minute, is that right? You can use the hole as a hold but if you do, their not responsible if it doesn’t stand the weight? Huh? No way, let me take a closer look…

Yes your hand can fit but don't put it in here

An access hole to access what? I can use it but if I do, you’re not responsible for anything that happens as a result? So why’d you put it there? You know, if a manufacturer is going to make something for you to use, then make it right. Don’t put it there and then tell us you can use it but whatever happens is on you!

What happened to accountability? Responsibility? Safety? Doing the right thing? It was a convenient place to put a hole but inconvenient to reinforce it so it could handle the weight of the contents? Then why put it there at all?

I’m done!

This post has nothing to do with Slipp-Nott, sport safety, basketball traction, traction mats, NBA players, NCAA Championships or any such thing. It is just something that popped into my head as I was reading a blog post on Network Theory. The post put forth a concept. It suggested that based on Network Theory, your basketball team might actually improve if you lose your best player. The theory looks at basketball and making a basket as a one route through a network of all possible combinations of passes (and plays). It takes into account forcing players to change “possible routes” but the defense, not at all.

I posit that even if you could take the defense into account that it can’t possibly take into account the complexities of the dependencies that develop between players on a team and therefore cannot truly predict the performance differences/improvements. I don’t think that Network theory can actually model the behavior of a team but I do however think that mixing it up by not having the best player in there can really help the other players and would actually force them to “step up” in game situations. Unfortunately, unless the coach sees basketball as a way to help build character rather than one more notch closer or farther away from the championship, keeping the best player off the floor will not be a strategy most coaches are willing to employ.

One might think that keeping the best player off the practice floor may yield the same thing but without “game pressure”, I doubt you can really hope to have the players make tough decisions that will actually lead to significant changes in behavior/performance. Certainly there is a lot more to be said about this and I am admittedly NOT a coach, nor claim to be one and can therefore in no way know the pressures a coach and administration face when it comes to putting a team on the playing field. These are only my musings.

Everything seems to be driven by money these days. Few sporting events would even happen if the possibility of winning weren’t on the table so “character building” will have to be found elsewhere I suppose. Of course, we all want to win and if you are a coach, you are being paid to win — but is that the way it should be? Perhaps coaches and sports would help produce nicer, more thoughtful people if during their formative years, children were taught:

how to make the best of things (such as when your best player is injured)

how/when to make that extra pass (how to share)

how to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the players on both teams (pay attention)

how to assess their own strengths and weaknesses (how to be objective and work on their weaknesses while also building on their strengths)

why we shouldn’t give up (or perhaps when to give up so as to save some energy for the next game)

why winning isn’t the only thing (though it does feel great, sometimes it feels just as great to spread the wealth by letting all the kids play — even the ones that may guarantee another loss)

There are many other things to gain from sports, this was just a short list that I wrote off the cuff.

Again, everyone wants to win. How much would you pay someone to teach your children these things? What do you think that would be worth? Would you prefer to have a perfect season if the cost was having your son or your friend’s daughter, cousin or anyone’s child just warming the bench and being a spectator for the entire season?

In my opinion, few people are going to put any significance on whether their son’s/daughter’s team dominated the entire 6 and under league! On the other hand, just a few of the things children can be taught at an early age:

that the concept of playing on/for a team and the team’s record far outweighs personal records and goals (while playing on the team)

how to evaluate situations with the team’s benefit in mind even if it means passing up taking the shot themselves because someone else has a better shot at making it

sitting out a play so that someone else can feel what it’s like to play can feel just as good or better than being out there for another 15 seconds

how about a little thing called “sportmanship”? Winning is great but is it the end of the world to lose?

My 2¢

Your thoughts? Why don’t you add what you think children should/could learn from sports at an early age that can/will help teach them later on in life?

Have you ever done a search for a particular term or topic and and clicked on a link only to find that it is recycled blog from years past? This has happened to me on several occasions. I did a search for basketball shoes and better traction and have gotten links to old blog posts as “new postings” on more than one occasion. Keep in mind that some of the dates appear to be new and the authors and “comments” by these authors change, but you immediately recognize that you’ve read it before!

Have a look at these and you’ll see what I mean:

Come on, if you’ve taken the time to get yourself a domain or set up a blog account somewhere, why not come up with original content???

Your thoughts?
